“The erection of the lighthouse benefitted the towns of Gosport and Brighton more than Presqu'ile. Gosport was created after the Presqu'ile settlers petitioned in the late 1820s to replace the discredited Newcastle site. The new lighthouse ensured a safer harbour and contributed to the development of wharves and the growth of commercial fisheries at Brighton in the 1850s. In conjunction with improved harbour access, the Brighton port maintained a busy export trade involving products like lumber, grain, fish, cheese, and apples, and imports of dry goods and manufactured wares.”
This year the Lighthouse will be celebrating 175 years young!
July 17-19 Presqu'ile Point Lighthouse Preservation Society will hold a Lighthouse Festival, including a Ghost Walk, Fun Run, Street Dance, Boat and Car Racing, Art, Bingo, Bowling, Breakfast, Barbecue and so much more! http://pplighthousefestevents.ca/
