For whom the bell tolls...dinner bell-come get it...school’s out...wedding bells...it would appear before that ding on your computer messages were often conveyed by the ringing of a bell.
Brighton at one time had a chorus of bells announcing events and celebrations. The Town Hall bell from 1884 rests now as a reminder at Memorial Park. Imagine it ringing for town council meetings, court cases or announcing the opera shows......or maybe to announce an emergency. If you heard every bell ringing in town and country it would be a wake-up call for sure.
Some bells have found a heart in collectors and remain in Brighton after being auctioned off at the end of their service. Hilton School bell all intact can still bang out quite a tone. Other bells in use can be found at farmers orchards or aside the kitchen hall. Apple picking or chores are halted briefly for sandwiches and soup or maybe a hot meal when the clang of a field bell tolls.
Church bells can often been heard on Sunday and in many cases play a wonderful part of a wedding.
Photos are current shots of local bells.
Until this piece I did not realize we had this many bells displayed around town. Recognize which bell is the Hilton School bell, the Orchard bell, the Hwy 64 bell, the farmers bell, the Town Hall bell and the kitchen door bell?
