Last week I opened the door of the Cellar Door, maybe better known by the name of their supplier Wine Expert. Wine Expert is the world's foremost supplier of premium wine kits. http://www.winexpert.com/

I met Sarah; she bought the Cellar Door 5 years ago and moved it to the current location of the Elizabeth Street strip mall. Sarah is from California. She found the love of her life in our town and now lives with her husband on the family property in Hilton.

How does it work? You choose and buy the juice, then you sprinkle some yeast on top of it and 5-6 weeks later a volume of 30 bottles is ready to be bottled. Sarah and her helpers will provide the in-between maintenance of moving it from the bucket to the jug. They have a `nursery’ for the `speciality’ wines that need a little bit more attention. Bottling the wine can be done at the store. The cost of each bottle will depend on the choice of juice, but seems to be averaging between $3 and $6 per bottle.

Sarah talked to me about the meaning of wine in our society. It’s a product that is not dependent on the economy, because even in difficult times people will come together with family and friends and drink wine. Wine is associated with happy and positive things.

I asked her which wine is made the most in our town. She said it seems to be red wine. Red is associated with warm, cosy comfort which means in the winter people gear more towards red. White is more associated with cool and refreshing, which means that in the summer more white wine is being made, but over the year it is 60-40 for Red.

Sarah and her helpers are passionate about wine, know their wines and make you feel welcome.

Like always, don’t be shy, open the door and look what is behind the storefront.
